EASY HOMEMADE PITA CHIPS
I have been making pita chips for a while now and from the day I first started, I couldn’t believe how easy it was to make your own. Oven baked pita chips are a great accompaniment to dips and spreads, and you can chose any herb and spice mix you prefer. This easy pita chips recipe is great to have on hand and they will make any quick snack so much tastier.
Are pita chips healthy?
Making your own pita chips gives you perfect control over what goes into them, in terms of oil and salt. I am using shop bought pita bread here for this recipe, but you can still limit the additional foods used. They are certainly healthier than many chips or crisps varieties so there is that advantage.
Which ingredients are needed for pita chips?
Pita Bread - use whichever pita bread you prefer. You can leave the pockets whole, or open them up and cut them horizontally with a knife or scissors, giving you thinner pita chips. In this case the baking time should be slightly reduced so they don’t burn.
Oil - use olive or rapeseed oil
Herbs & spices - only use dried herbs and spices here, no fresh ones. You can sprinkle some fresh herbs over the chips AFTER you have baked them. As for which herbs or spices to use: I have tried Za’atar, Italian Herb Mix, Ras-el-Hanout, and all of them work well.
How should I store pita chips?
Leftover pita chips are best stored in an airtight container in the cupboard, where they will last a week. Having said that, in my house they usually get eaten very quickly so I rarely have many left over.
How do I make pita chips?
1. Heat the oven to 170C/375F
2. Depending on your preference, you can cut the pita pockets in half lengthways. Lay them flat on a work surface.
3. In a bowl, mix the oil and herbs.
4. Brush the mixture all over the pita breads.
5. Using a knife or a pizza cutter, cut the pitas in triangles.
6. Place the triangles on a baking sheet.
7. Place in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes.
8. Remove the pita chips from the oven. They will crisp up further when they cool down so don’t worry if they still seem a little soft. It’s better to take them out now then to leave them in too long when they could burn.
9. Enjoy with your favourite dip such as guacomole, hummus or salsa.
